what distance? is a new piece for viola and tape which continues on the thread of recent work meditating on the military-industrial complex and it’s role in shaping global existence. The piece was commissioned by INA GRM and performed as part of their Focus concert series at the Centquatre, Paris in June 2026.

Conceived in part while in residence at Cove Park, Scotland – an artist residency situated between the military bases of Faslane and Coulport where the UK government’s nuclear submarines are docked, maintained and potentially deployed – I reflected on the necessary maintenance of perceived distance between groups of humans in order to maintain the idea of “other”/“enemy” and justify the continuation of the war industry.

The piece uses field recordings from the waters surrounding the military bases, alongside synthesis and processed instrumental recordings developed during a period of residency at the GRM studios. Feelings of agitation and submersion coincide with a joyful exploration of sound designed for the incredible 32 speaker acousmonium.
